In “Harvard Business School Essay Analysis, 2012-2013” there are several excellent suggestions for completing the two mandatory essays (400 words each) and post-interview write-up (400 words). I love the mandatory essay questions, particularly “Tell us about something you wish you had done better,” as they encourage introspection and reveal the applicant’s level of self-awareness. Take the time to consider a true failure that made you recognize a weakness in yourself. Ideally, you should show not only how you overcame that failure but also how you took steps to prevent it from occurring again. If you give a disingenuous answer or avoid the question, you will look cowardly at best and arrogant at worst.
